Inside Istrouma Brewing, the New ‘Art-Farm’ Brewery in the Capital Region
Pulling up to Istrouma Brewing, it’s easy to see how different this brewery experience will be for visitors. The barn-turned-brewery is surrounded by beautiful land, horses and gorgeous landscaping at Sugar Farms, a working farm in St. Gabriel that also houses Feed & Seed restaurant, an art gallery and more. Once inside the brewery, memorabilia color the walls, along with tables made out of pianos, seating in old hollowed-out cars, and paintings made on old doors.

Just down the road, an imaginative escape at Sugar Farms’ Istrouma Brewery
On perhaps one of South Louisiana’s most gorgeous days of this godforsaken year, the four members of the Country Roads editorial team convened in the little river town of St. Gabriel. Though it’s just enough off the beaten path to convince someone they’ve wandered far, far from home, Sugar Farms is only a twenty-minute drive from our Baton Rouge office. Of course, in this year’s move to work-from-home, it’s become increasingly rare for the four of us to gather in person at all, and on this afternoon we each made around an hour’s drive from our respective home offices in St. Francisville, New Orleans, Mandeville, and Scott.

Sweet Dreams: Sugar Farms brings a family’s vision for a country home and a bustling brewery to life
On a winding gravel road, off a country lane, not far from the parish line sits a pretty little house on top of a hill, surrounded by acres of farmland and groves of trees. And plenty of potential. Rural? Check. Cattle fences? Check. Porches? Check. Barn? Check. A gravel road? By the time John and Joanna Haynes drove up to this residence on Bayou Paul Road in St. Gabriel and let their young sons out of the vehicle, the want list for potential new residences had quickly been checked off. But the gravel road sealed the deal.

Istrouma Eatery & Brewery in St. Gabriel has something for everyone. You may go for the food, but you will stay for the fun. Once you turn into the gravel driveway, the unique experience begins. Texas Longhorns and chickens greet you as you walk up to the eatery. You can sit inside or outside, there’s plenty of space. All food at Istrouma is made from scratch. Their pizzas are delicious. They have a secret recipe that makes their dough distinct. They have a full menu of brunch, lunch, and dinner items that is sure to satisfy even the pickiest eater. Aside from the eatery, Istrouma is a brewery and they brew eight different beers.
